Trade officials from Mexico, Canada, and the United States are meeting in Washington, D.C. for the first round of renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Take Action for the NAFTA we need: Open and transparent, serving the common good.
During his campaign, President Donald Trump made renegotiating NAFTA to get a “better deal” for the United States a campaign promise. While there were few specifics in the proposal he sent to Congress, it seems to be shaping up to be just another broken trade deal that favors and expands corporate interests over people and over God’s creation.
Maryknoll missioners serving in Mexico witnessed the tremendous harm caused by NAFTA over the last 23 years. The livelihoods of smallholder farmers and rural economies were ruined. Promises of good jobs with fair wages in other sectors never came true. NAFTA has ultimately contributed to a rise in migration to the United States and greater income inequality.
We fear that a renegotiated NAFTA will only exacerbate these devastating impacts.
Act Now: Tell President Trump and Congress to say NO to another broken trade deal and YES to a vision that puts God’s creation and vulnerable people at the center.
