Scientists agree that dramatic action must be taken in phasing out fossil fuels to prevent global catastrophe. But there is plenty to inspire hope.
In a landmark case of Held v. Montana, a group of youths ages 5-22 just won a surprising legal victory, with the judge ruling that the state had denied their constitutional right to a healthy environment by not vetting fossil fuel projects. This historic victory is already opening the door to a new battlefront and renewed excitement.
As July marked the hottest month in Earth’s recorded history, UN Secretary General António Guterres declared: “the era of global boiling has arrived…. Climate change is here. It is terrifying. And it is just the beginning,” But he added in the same breath: “It is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5C and avoid the very worst of climate change. But only with dramatic, immediate climate action.”
We invite you to ask your state legislature to also become part of the climate solution by signing on to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Half a million individuals, hundreds of cities and states, and even countries around the world have taken the same pledge to:
- End expansion of any new coal, oil or gas production
- Phase-out existing production of fossil fuels in a manner that is fair and equitable, and
- Ensure a global just transition to 100% access to renewable energy
Use the form below to ask your state legislators to join the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. We hope to see you at March to End Fossil Fuels on September 17th in New York City!
