I HAVE BEEN A NURSE SINCE 1963, working 17 yrs in the Emergency Room…. needless to say I was taking care of pts with AIDS a while before we even had an idea of what it was………how it was spread…etc. yes, it was scary.
Many people were afraid that I would bring an illness to them…………so I had to often just be a bit quiet about the whole medical condition. Even some staff were afraid…………..it was so sad.
I made good friends with the ones who had the symptoms and word spread that they should ask for Patricia to take care of them………and they would not mind waiting.
IT WAS A SPECIAL TIME FOR SURE……
some years later I had moved and actually worked on a unit at a hospital were we called it ISU. the Immunosuppressed unit. we knew what AIDS was and in those eight bed unit families, friends…etc…got to share fears….etc with each other.. so it was a “good way of helping and teaching.
I felt honored that they trusted me and could ask me anything…..and they knew I cared and prayed for them…I am blessed.
