Tell Congress: Hold the Administration Accountable on Immigration

March 17 marked the 45th anniversary of the Refugee Act, the law which established the right of migrants to seek asylum in the United States. It was a somber milestone under the current Administration as the vast majority of overseas refugee processing remains paused, no refugees are being resettled, contracts for resettlement agencies are largely still terminated, and access to asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border has ground to a halt. Federal judges issued an injunction in February on the Trump Administration to resume paused activities, but the Administration has not offered any concrete steps to comply with the order.

The weekend before Monday, March 17, the Trump administration invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to send over two hundred Venezuelan migrants to prison in El Salvador without any due process. The action was a direct violation of another federal judge’s orders that came only hours earlier. The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns released a statement on the situation.

Instead of working to comply with the court order, the Trump Administration is now considering nationality-based travel bans.

Join us in urging Congress to hold the administration accountable, ending the use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, restoring refugee resettlement and access to asylum, and protecting unaccompanied children and others at risk of detention and deportation.
