President Biden: Close Guantanamo

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on December 17 the repatriation of Guantánamo detainee Mohammed Abdul Malik Bajabu to Kenya. The Defense Department announced more transfers of detainees, with possibly more on the way. All these transfers bring the United States closer to ending the sad chapter of torture and human rights abuses at Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp.

The White House has been unequivocal on President Biden’s determination to close the detention center at Guantánamo Bay, a campaign promise both he and former President Obama made. With little more than a month left in office, however, there is little time for President Biden to succeed in his commitment to ending a lasting symbol torture and human rights abuses perpetrated by the United States.

Many of the remaining inmates at Guantánamo are already cleared for transfer out of the prison. Recently, a judge ruled in favor of allowing a plea deal of life in prison for the highest profile inmates most responsible for 9/11. Join us in calling on the Biden Administration not to let let up on the goal of closing Guantánamo, and work to transfer these men to countries that will respect their human rights.

Continuing to hold people indefinitely without charge or trial compounds the abuses and torture that have taken place at the military detention center at Guantánamo. The detention center is a moral stain on this country that must be shuttered.
