Join Webinar on Haiti
What should “love your neighbor” mean for U.S. policy toward Haiti? In honor of Pope Francis, who consistently emphasized the importance of “love your neighbor” as a fundamental aspect of our faith, we invite you to take action for Haiti.
In Haiti, years of U.S. interventions, including military occupation, political interference and economic dominance, have undermined the Caribbean country’s ability to develop strong, independent institutions and democratic governance. On top of all of that, the U.S. government has done very little to stop guns from U.S. states with weak gun laws from ending up in the hands of violent gangs in the Haitian capital city of Port-au-Prince. The resulting chaos and instability have brought the country to the brink of collapse. More than 1 million people, nearly 10 percent of the population, have been displaced. Now, as the Trump administration eliminates most U.S. foreign aid contracts, access to life-saving health services in Haiti are in jeopardy.
Join tomorrow’s webinar: “Stop Illegal Arms to Haiti”
Thursday, April 24 at 1 pm ET
Bill O’Neill, UN expert on human rights in Haiti, will speak about the current situation in Haiti and John Lindsay-Poland, expert on demilitarization of U.S. policy in Latin America, will discuss solutions, based on his experience working on U.S. gun policy with Mexico.
Sign the Petition “Stem Crisis in Haiti”
Organized by the Quixote Center, the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, Pax Christi USA and others, the petition asks the Secretary of Homeland Security to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians whose home country is not a safe place to return. The petition also calls for a number of steps to prevent the current, steady flow of firearms into Haiti, fueling the gang violence hundreds of thousands of Haitians have fled over the past several years.
