Take Action for Democracy in Guatemala

We are working with the Root Causes Initiative to change the underlying conditions forcing Central American families to leave their homes and migrate north. Led by the Hope Border Institute and Faith in Action International, the Root Causes Initiative is fueled by our love for our neighbors and our serious concerns about the growing corruption and setbacks in civil and human rights in the region – particularly in Guatemala.

Take action: Ask the Biden-Harris administration to apply tough financial sanctions on corrupt officials and oligarchs in Guatemala.

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has forced more than two dozen independent judges, prosecutors, and human rights defenders into exile for standing up against corruption and rights abuses.

The attack on the rule of law is a part of a systematic effort to roll back the progress that Guatemala has made in holding military leaders accountable for human rights abuses and addressing corruption that impoverishes ordinary Guatemalans. The United States needs to turn their words of criticism of the Guatemalan government into consequential action by imposing financial sanctions on corrupt officials and businesspeople who have supported and benefited from the attacks on democracy in Guatemala.

Please support economic sanctions on corrupt officials and oligarchs in Guatemala by adding your name as an individual or organization to a faith and civil society letter calling on the U.S. leadership to take action now.
