Join the Relay of Hope

Over 70 countries are either in or near debt distress, according to the International Monetary Fund, and 48 of those spend more on debt interest payments than on either education or healthcare.

Pope Francis declared 2025 a Jubilee year of restoration, calling for the cancellation of debts held by nations unable to repay them. Pope Leo XIV is committed to continuing this mission.

We invite you to join the global Relay of Hope, from May 24 to May 28, in honor of the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’. This initiative is part of the Turn Debt into Hope campaign, which seeks to reverse the debt crisis that keeps millions trapped in poverty.

To participate, simply gather a group and pass a candle, reflecting on why we must turn debt into hope. The candle symbolizes how addressing the debt crisis can free resources to fight poverty and bring hope.

Whether with friends, colleagues, or a larger group, you can light your candle and begin with a prayer such as this one. Or you could share a reflection on the ways the global debt crisis is affecting communities around the world, and the decisions we need governments and lenders to take to Turn Debt into Hope.

Caritas encourages you to share your relay plans with them and also share photos or videos to caritasrelay@gmail.com.

Thank you for standing with Pope Francis’ legacy of hope, shining a light on solidarity with communities affected by the global debt crisis. Together, we will carry out the relay across the planet and share this hope worldwide.
