Thousands of Guatemalans have taken to the streets in peaceful protest for the defense of their democracy. The protests - led by indigenous leaders - are in response to interference in the election victory of anti-corruption presidential candidate Bernardo Arevalo. Join us in standing in solidarity with them.
They call for the resignation of Attorney General Maria Consuelo Porras and other political officials who have attempted to subvert the election results by raiding the country’s electoral authority and criminalizing Arevalo’s party, in a slow-moving attempt to block the peaceful transfer of power. The Attorney General has a documented history of prosecuting anti-corruption attorneys and judges and is on the U.S. State Department’s list of corrupt and anti-democratic actors.
We are hearing from Maryknoll missioners and affiliates in Guatemala that pressure from the United States can make a difference, and that such pressure is needed right now.
Ask President Biden to stand up for democracy in Guatemala by calling on Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei to receive the resignation of Attorney General Porras and guarantee the peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Arévalo using the form below.
