New START Treaty Ends Tonight
Tonight at midnight, the world will become a more dangerous place.
New START, the last remaining treaty capping the number of nuclear warheads in the U.S. and Russian arsenals, is set to expire on February 5, potentially unleashing a new arms race.
Take action now to stop a nuclear arms race.
“As people of faith, we cannot remain silent,” says Dan Moriarty, Senior Program Officer for Peace and Nonviolence at Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns. “We can afford neither the monetary cost nor the existential risk such an arms race would pose. Catholic teaching holds that spending on such weapons constitutes a theft from the poor, and that the development and possession of nuclear weapons is morally unacceptable. They threaten human life and all of God’s creation.” (Read Dan’s full statement on our website.)
The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns has joined 54 faith and civil society organizations in a letter to Congress calling for three actions to prevent a new nuclear arms race. We invite you to write to President Trump and your members of Congress now, echoing the call of Pope Leo XVI and the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and urging the Unites States to:
- Maintain New START nuclear stockpile levels.
- Pursue diplomatic negotiations for a follow-on treaty.
- Commit to concrete steps toward nuclear disarmament.
Take action now: Read more and join us in urging Congress and the White House to stop a new nuclear arms race today.
