Faith advocates meet in senate offices to urge against passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Stop the “One Big Beautiful Bill”

Congress is considering harmful funding cuts and policy changes that would take away nutrition assistance and healthcare from millions of Americans, roll back investments in clean energy, devastate refugee assistance programs, and ramp up immigration enforcement, all through the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R. 1).

The Senate voted for the “One Big Beautiful Bill” budget reconciliation act on July 1, 12 noon ET, with Vice President JD Vance’s tie breaking vote. Now, the bill returns to the House for approval.

Take action: Ask your representative in Congress to protect the health of all, the health of our planet and our immigrant communities — and reject H.R. 1.

In recent days, Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns staff members have been on Capitol Hill visiting offices of key senators and representatives, to discuss the threat H.R. 1 poses to people and the planet. We also signed on to a letter with 44 other national religious organizations calling on senators to reject H.R. 1.

Budgets are moral documents that outline a nation’s priorities. Our faith guides our belief that our government has a moral obligation to support the most vulnerable in our communities. In addition to steep cuts in food assistance and Medicare affecting millions of people, the bill would:

  • Repeal Inflation Reduction Act clean energy investments that have created over 270,000 new jobs, lowered household energy costs, and reduced pollution that harms our health, especially in low-income and frontline communities
  • Forfeit $500 billion in projected private-sector investments and stall critical progress in reducing U.S. emissions by 40 percent by 2030
  • Spend $150 billion for immigration enforcement and the border, enough to maintain 100,000 people detained annually, nearly tripling the current capacity, increasing deportations, and separating families
  • Cut core health and food programs that serve legal immigrants and refugees.
