World Week of Prayer for Peace in Sudan

As the conflict in Sudan enters its fourth year, millions have been displaced, and thousands have lost their lives. Sudan is widely described as the world’s largest and most forgotten humanitarian crisis, with around 9.5 million people internally displaced and nearly 21 million people facing acute food insecurity. As of January 2025, the U.S. has officially determined a genocide is taking place in Sudan.

Pope Leo XIV recently remarked “How much the Sudanese people are suffering, innocent victims of this inhuman tragedy! I renew my heartfelt appeal to the parties to the conflict to lay down their weapons and, without preconditions, begin sincere dialogue aimed at bringing this fratricidal war to an end as soon as possible.” As people of faith, we have the responsibility to raise our voice against this injustice.

Amid this darkness, hope still exists, but it requires our collective commitment to peace, justice, and action. U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, recently published a statement marking three years since the conflict began and sharing his intention to introduce legislation on Sudan in the coming weeks.

Take Action

Our friends at Pax Christi International are hosting the World Week of Prayer for Peace in Sudan this week and offer resources to raise awareness and mobilize action for peace.

Pray for peace in Sudan using this prayer by our friends at Christian Aid.

Contact your Members of Congress and urge them to act for Sudan.  We call upon our government to:

  1. Enforce the arms embargo on Darfur.
  2. Demand an immediate end to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) attacks on civilians.
  3. Push the RSF to allow humanitarian access and safe passage for civilians trying to flee the violence.

Together, through prayer, advocacy, and solidarity, we can work toward a future where the people of Sudan are able to live in peace and safety.
