Israel-Palestine: The Grim Reality of Occupation

As the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories enters its 59th year, human rights organizations working in both Israel and the occupied territories present a harrowing overview of a year defined by systemic violence, territorial expansion, and the steady erosion of democratic principles both within the occupied territories and inside Israel itself. Operating as “The Platform,” the coalition argues that the occupation has solidified into a permanent regime characterized by an apartheid-like structure, forced displacement, and illegal annexation.

The report emphasizes that human rights are universal, asserting that the occupation is inherently illegal and immoral. According to their findings, the Israeli government has accelerated its policies to systematically violate the basic rights of millions of Palestinians across Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Concurrently, the organizations warn of a severe regression of rights within Israel, noting a systemic retreat from the rule of law and a persistent narrowing of Israel’s own democratic space.

Gaza: Permanent Crisis

While a ceasefire took effect in October 2025, the reality in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic. The coalition notes that two years of intensive fighting involved widespread breaches of the rules of war, escalating to actions that many legal experts say constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Despite the truce, Israeli forces continue to strike population centers, causing hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, while systematically destroying infrastructure in areas that remain under military control.

The humanitarian fallout is compounded by severe restrictions on aid and goods. With Israel concentrating Gaza’s population of roughly two million residents into less than half of the strip’s territory, chronic deprivation, extreme overcrowding, and perpetual fear have become normalized. Approximately 18,500 sick and wounded individuals remain stranded, awaiting vital medical evacuations granted only under rare circumstances. As international attention shifts toward regional tensions with Iran, Gaza’s plight has been sidelined, with no viable path toward reconstruction.

The West Bank: Violence and Annexation

In the West Bank, the report documents an aggressive push toward permanent annexation in direct defiance of international law. A central mechanism of this policy is an unprecedented surge in Israeli settler violence, which the coalition states is openly and directly backed by state authorities. The coalition says this coordinated intimidation has succeeded in terrorizing Palestinian communities, forcing dozens of rural villagers to abandon their homes, moving the vision of permanent Israeli control into reality.

To shield themselves from scrutiny, the coalition reports, Israeli authorities frequently ban their human rights observers from entering volatile areas and cut off their support networks. Meanwhile, daily life for the 3.4 million Palestinian residents of the West Bank is stifled by severe, pervasive movement restrictions, with vast swaths of the territory rendered entirely inaccessible. This physical constriction is mirrored economically; the Palestinian Authority is currently gripped by a severe financial crisis brought on by Israeli policies that paralyze and choke off economic development.

East Jerusalem: Bureaucratic Displacement

The coalition reports an equally aggressive campaign in East Jerusalem, where the government of Israel and the Jerusalem Municipality are advancing legal and bureaucratic measures not seen since 1967 to displace entire Palestinian neighborhoods. These include the administrative acquisition of land by the state, the systematic eviction of families to transfer homes to settler organizations, and urban planning designed exclusively for Jewish residents.
This restructuring is paired with deep systemic discrimination against the city’s Palestinian inhabitants. Municipal authorities freeze almost all planning permits for Palestinians, demolish homes, and deny basic services. The situation is particularly acute for communities trapped beyond the separation wall, who endure harsh movement restrictions alongside near-total municipal neglect.

Violation of Detainees’ Rights

The report also examines the treatment of over 9,000 Palestinians, many of them minors, held by Israel on security charges. Whether serving formal sentences or held without trial under administrative detention and the Unlawful Combatants Law, they face inhumane conditions. The coalition documents pervasive violence, degradation, severe overcrowding, starvation, and systematic medical neglect.

The coalition warns that the occupation has fundamentally corrupted Israeli society from within. Inside Israel’s borders, core democratic pillars—the judiciary, law enforcement, a free press, and civil society—face sustained political assaults. Measures like selective law enforcement, efforts to constrain human rights groups, and the suppression of free expression have eroded the space for civil participation. Because the vast majority of rights violations are never properly investigated, the coalition concludes, a culture of absolute impunity has flourished, ensuring that violence and suffering continue to escalate unchecked.
